Aspen Medical has acquired a majority shareholding in Ironside Recruitment, a Melbourne-based recruitment company specialising in transitioning ex-Defence members to other industry sectors. Ironside provided key personnel to Aspen Medical during the company’s successful Ebola Response contract in West Africa in 2014 and 2015.
Bruce Armstrong, CEO of Aspen Medical said, “We are delighted to welcome Ironside Recruitment to the Aspen Medical family. Defence is in our DNA and we know that the skills and experience of ex-Defence members leads to successful outcomes for our clients.
“We are excited about growing this business and bringing the value of employing ex-Defence personnel to companies in many sectors including Resources, Energy, Rail, Transport, Logistics and Defence,” he continued.
Ironside Recruitment was founded in 2012 by Glen Ferrarotto, who transitioned from the Army in 2008 having served for 10 years as mechanic. Mr Ferrarotto, a veteran of Afghanistan and service within Australian Special Operations, will assume the role of Executive Director of Ironside Recruitment and continue to pursue the company’s vision of being Australia and New Zealand’s most trusted recruitment agency for ex-service men and women.
“Being a part of Aspen Medical is a natural fit for Ironside Recruitment. Both organisations understand how the hard earned skills and experience of ex-ADF personnel translate in the civilian world and together we are dedicated to helping them sell their achievements in a way that employers see strategic value,” said Mr Ferrarotto.
In addition to its core business, Ironside Recruitment also delivers transition and employment support to wounded, injured and ill veterans through tailored employment pathway programs delivered on behalf of the Returned and Services League (RSL) and Queensland-based ex-service organisation, Mates4Mates.
Last week Ironside Recruitment attended Land Forces 2016 in Adelaide.
It was a rewarding few days networking with Defence Industry, which saw the creation of new pathways to employment for ex-service personnel through the establishment of new supplier arrangements. It was also an opportunity to spend some time with our current clients and see not only the work our candidates have contributed too, but the way in which capabilities have been built.
We were also located with our partner Mates4Mates and were able to talk to industry about the employment program which is active across Australia for Mates.
Ironside Recruitment is looking forward to the work ahead with our clients and securing our candidates roles across Defence Industry.
Ironside Recruitment and Executive Risk Solutions (ERS) hosted a working lunch in Perth on 11th August, with the aim of engaging Industry in the future development of Veteran Employment Programs.
Having held positions in the Private Sector following a 10 year career in the Army, Glen Ferrarotto founded Ironside Defence & Mining; providing Business Development Services across Defence, Law Enforcement, Government and the Resources Sectors. After working in partnership with Defence and Industry and driven by a desire to translate the unique experiences and skills of veterans, led to the conception of Ironside Recruitment in 2012.
Ironside Recruitment is now Australasia’s most trusted employment agency for service men and women transitioning into new civilian careers.
ERS was founded in 2008 by Scott Houston Ex SAS Soldier. ERS is a highly dedicated Perth-based company that provides its clients with solutions across the full scope of emergency, security, and health services that are complemented by a suite of specialised consulting services in its expanding field of operations. ERS was awarded the Telstra Australian Business of the Year in 2015, and the W.A Business Rising Star in 2014.
The lunch was a great success with many Corporate Affairs and Human Resources representatives from the Mining, Oil and Gas sectors attending.
The Honourable Sean L’Estrange, Minister for Mines and Petroleum joined us along with 40 Industry professionals to discuss veteran transition. The Minister shared his own personal experience transitioning and his desire to see more private and public organisations employing returned service men and women. Mr L’Estrange reinforced this support in his August Newsletter ”we should recognise that the depth and breadth of their skills, their outstanding work ethic, and the fact that they are used to being pushed out of their comfort zone make them excellent employees”.
During the lunch participants were asked to share their opinion on the benefits and barriers that companies perceive when employing Ex-Army personnel. While the authoritarian leadership is one of the aspects that was perceived, the participants had a lot to say about the advantages of employing service men and women. These included:
Returned service men and women ingrained attributes from the military ethos “Loyalty, Responsibility and Commitment” and this was undeniably recognised at the lunch yesterday.
ERS and the Ironside team will continue to work to formalise a program for the Resources Sector that facilitates veteran’s transition into the civilian workplace.

Importantly, two of the Mates, we are already engaged with on the program where there, one of whom, has just signed a letter of offer, for full time employment with an Energy Company in Brisbane.

We're pleased to announce the successful completion of our Victorian RSL Veterans Employment Program Pilot, and subsequent long term strategic partnership with RSL Victoria.
Following a favorable independent audit verifying the success of the Program, we are moving into a long term partnership with the Victorian RSL, that will take lessons learnt from the Pilot, and continue to build on and deliver real employment outcomes for Veterans right across the State.
Audit's aside, the real measure of success for our Program, has come from one Veteran's comments after we secured his first long term job in many years. When asked how he viewed the opportunity to work with Ironside and RSL, he said, 'if it wasn't for this program, I would have been in a pine box by now.'
In conjunction with the Victorian RSL Program, we have been running a parallel program in Tasmania with equaled success and we have recently accepted our first Veteran through the New South Wales RSL and Defence Care.
Ironside Recruitment, remains committed to the notion of Employing Veterans and ex-Services people based on good business strategy and direction, not out of pity, and we'll look forward to continuing our work with RSL, Mates4Mates and the Army's Transition4Employment Program as we develop throughout 2016.
